Introduction to Art of Our Time is an in-depth course that invites students to enter the complex, dynamic, and often challenging world of contemporary art with curiosity and confidence. Rather than presenting contemporary art as a closed or elitist field, the course frames it as an open conversation — one that reflects the realities, tensions, and hopes of the world we live in today.

The course explores how artists respond to the present moment: to rapid technological change, shifting political landscapes, environmental concerns, questions of identity, memory, and power. Students will examine a wide range of artistic practices, from painting and sculpture to installation, performance, video, and digital media, learning how each medium carries meaning in different ways.

A central goal of the course is to develop the ability to see critically. Students will learn how to approach artworks without fear of “not understanding,” how to ask productive questions, and how to recognize the cultural, historical, and institutional contexts that shape artistic production. Emphasis is placed on interpretation, discussion, and reflection rather than on fixed answers.

The course also addresses how contemporary art circulates in the world — through museums, biennials, galleries, public space, and online platforms — and how these systems influence what becomes visible, valued, or contested. By understanding these structures, students gain insight into how art participates in broader social and political conversations.

Introduction to Art of Our Time is designed for those at the beginning of their journey as well as for anyone seeking to deepen their relationship with contemporary culture. It provides essential tools for visual literacy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness that extend far beyond the art world itself. By the end of the course, students will not only be able to navigate contemporary art with greater clarity and confidence, but also develop a more attentive, questioning, and engaged way of seeing the present.
